2025 SQL Microgrants Winners

in 2025, we recognised 15 incredible startups across Queenstown Lakes for their bold ideas, creativity, and drive to make an impact.

From tech to tourism, sustainability to community projects, the diversity of applications shows just how strong our startup ecosystem is. The Microgrants recipients were awared a grant of betwenn $500 NZD - $3000 NZD.

What is a Microgrant?

A microgrant is small-scale funding (NZD $500–$3,000) designed to support your startups progress. Whether you are a local founder that needs to grow, pivot, or validate your business ideas, this microgrant is aimed to help you get there.

What Can a Microgrant Cover?

You can use the grant to support your startup’s next key milestone:

  • Product development.

  • Market research or testing.

  • Tools, subscriptions, or platforms.

  • Gaining visibility in the local startup ecosystem.

  • Business model validation or pivots.

Who Can Apply?

This program is open to founders and startups based in the Queenstown Lakes district who have:

  • Operated locally for at least 6 months.

  • A startup that contributes to one of the following focus areas:

  • Hospo-tech, Outdoor-tech, Film Industry, Sustainability, Food & Beverage. Or other relevant sectors aligned with our district’s future.

Applicants must provide proof of address and submit a brief overview of their startup, traction to date, and how the microgrant will be used.

Applications for the SQL Microgrants are now closed.

What We’re Not Looking For:

This funding is not intended for founders/innovators who:

  • Are based outside the Queenstown-Lakes region.

  • Are working on one off projects – we’re looking for ventures with long-term potential.

  • Lack a clear plan for using the funding.

  • Are at the stage of getting formal investment via angel rounds or via venture capital.

How much can I apply for?
You can apply for any amount from $500 to $3,000 depending on your needs and plan.

Do I need to pay it back or give away equity?
No. This is non-repayable grant and we do not take any equity stake.

Who reviews applications?
A panel of local entrepreneurs, investors, councillors, and business experts will review each application.

What support comes with the grant?
Successful applicants will receive ongoing mentorship and access to SQL Coaches.

Will you do this again next year?

At this stage, SQL Microgrants are a one-off. Generally we do not give any money to startups directly; we offer support, education , and connections. We don’t intend to do this again next year.
